## BOTTOMLAND FOREST AND WETLANDS PROTECTED FOREVER

The Batiste Creek conservation easement permanently protects 1,218 acres in Liberty County, Texas, east of Houston. The property sits in the Pine Island Bayou watershed, part of the Neches River Basin, and includes more than 200 acres of wetlands and 7.7 miles of streams and tributaries.

Large, intact natural tracts are increasingly rare in Southeast Texas, where industry, timber management, and transportation corridors have shaped much of the land. Batiste Creek is one of the exceptions. Its floodplain still works as a floodplain, its wetlands are still connected to its streams, and wildlife can still move through a broad, undeveloped landscape.

At 1,218 acres, it is one of the largest properties Unique Places to Save protects.

## CONSERVE

The conservation easement keeps Batiste Creek in a predominantly natural, scenic, forested, and undeveloped condition in perpetuity. It restricts industrial development and land disturbance across the whole property, protecting its bottomland hardwood forest, riparian woodland, wetlands, and more than 40,000 linear feet of streams.

Unique Places to Save holds the conservation easement, recorded in February 2026, and worked with the Batiste Creek Mitigation Bank to place it on the property.

## RESTORE

Parts of Batiste Creek were drained for timber management, which changed how water moved across the floodplain. The mitigation plan calls for restoring natural processes across 964 acres and enhancing 200 acres of riverine forested wetland.

The goal is a floodplain that functions naturally and stays connected to its stream corridors. That restoration work is now underway.

## HABITAT

The property is dominated by bottomland hardwood forest, mixed riparian woodland, and wetland plant communities typical of the Texas Gulf Coastal Plain. These habitats offer stopover and wintering habitat for migratory birds and support amphibians, reptiles, mammals, and aquatic life.

Wildlife found on the property includes white-tailed deer, raccoons, Virginia opossums, nine-banded armadillos, wood ducks, red-bellied woodpeckers, northern cardinals, Carolina wrens, cottonmouths, green anoles, American bullfrogs, and green treefrogs.

The wetlands and streams also store and slow floodwater, filter runoff, and hold sediment, which helps protect water quality downstream in the Neches River Basin.

Batiste Creek protects a large, connected tract of bottomland forest and wetland in a fast-changing part of coastal Texas. The easement makes that protection permanent, and the restoration now underway through the mitigation bank is designed to help the land recover natural processes that were lost to drainage.

> Working with Unique Places to Save on our wetland mitigation project has been an absolute pleasure. From start to finish, their team made the entire process incredibly smooth and straightforward. They took the time to understand our specific goals and ensured that our conservation efforts were tailored to protect the unique value of our property for the long term.
