Unique Places to Save is proud to announce the permanent protection of the Monkey Wrench Conservation Easement in Orange County, North Carolina.

Covering approximately 41.49 acres in the Neuse River Basin, the easement safeguards streams, wetlands, riparian buffers, and surrounding natural habitat that are critical to the long-term health of the watershed. Protecting 8,250 linear feet of stream—including the North Fork Little River and five tributaries—along with over 11 acres of restored and expanded wetland habitat, the area will remain in its natural condition in perpetuity.

The Monkey Wrench project represents a significant investment in reversing decades of agricultural impact from row crops and unmonitored livestock access. Restoration efforts designed by mitigation partner Wildlands Engineering, Inc. focus on reconnecting streams to floodplains, filtering sediment and nutrient runoff, treating invasive species, and restoring native Piedmont alluvial forest habitats.

This work supports broader watershed benefits by helping filter water entering the Falls Lake Neuse system and downstream drinking water resources. Through long-term conservation and perpetual stewardship, the Monkey Wrench easement delivers lasting environmental value for rural Orange County and the surrounding region.

Unique Places to Save is honored to hold and steward this conservation easement as part of its mission to protect valuable land and water resources across North Carolina. We are also grateful for the partnership with  Wildlands Engineering, Inc. and the participating landowners, whose collaboration made this permanent protection possible.
