Unique Places to Save is proud to announce the permanent protection of the Mudhoney II Conservation Easement in Chatham County, North Carolina.
This easement safeguards 8,224 linear feet of stream, 3.2 acres of wetlands, and native riparian buffers that are critical to the long-term health of the watershed. The protected area will remain in its natural condition in perpetuity, helping preserve scenic open space, aquatic resources, and wildlife habitat for future generations.
The Mudhoney II project represents an important investment in reconnecting streams to floodplains, removing inline impoundments, and restoring native vegetation on a former cattle and pig farm. Restoration efforts are designed to filter agricultural runoff, reduce sediment, improve watershed hydrology, and enhance the overall ecological function of the site.
This work also supports broader watershed benefits by protecting tributaries of the Cape Fear River and the downstream Bear Creek Aquatic Habitat, which supports rare aquatic species. Through long-term conservation and stewardship, the Mudhoney II easement will contribute lasting environmental value in a region where healthy stream and wetland systems are especially important.
Unique Places to Save is honored to hold and steward this conservation easement as part of its mission to protect valuable land and water resources across North Carolina. We are also grateful for the partnership with Wildlands Engineering, Inc., whose mitigation and restoration work has been valuable in advancing this effort and bringing the Mudhoney II project to completion.
