Unique Places to Save is proud to announce the permanent protection of the Pelican Island Conservation Easement in Galveston County, Texas.
Covering over 140 acres on the Bolivar Peninsula within the East Galveston Bay Watershed, the easement safeguards coastal wetlands, estuarine marsh, and surrounding natural habitat that are critical to the long-term health of the coastal ecosystem. The protected area will remain in its natural condition in perpetuity, helping preserve scenic open space, aquatic resources, and wildlife habitat for future generations.
The Pelican Island project represents an important investment in preserving coastal palustrine emergent and scrub-shrub wetlands. Conservation efforts are designed to maintain water quality, provide essential pollutant filtration, buffer hurricane storm surges, and enhance the overall ecological function of the site and surrounding waters in the Galveston Bay system.
This work also supports broader watershed benefits by protecting coastal aquatic systems and buffering adjacent conservation lands, including The Nature Conservancy's Elm Grove Preserve and nearby shorebird sanctuaries. Through long-term conservation and stewardship, the Pelican Island easement will contribute lasting environmental value in a region where healthy coastal wetland systems are especially important.
Unique Places to Save is honored to hold and steward this conservation easement as part of its mission to protect valuable land and water resources. We are also grateful for the partnership with Resource Environmental Solutions, whose support and collaboration have been valuable in advancing this effort and helping bring the Pelican Island project to completion.
