Located in Liberty County of Texas
The Batiste Creek conservation easement permanently protects 1,218 acres of forested bottomland and wetlands within the Pine Island Bayou watershed in Liberty County, Texas. It includes more than 200 acres of wetlands and approximately 40,000 linear feet of streams and tributaries, preserving nearly 8 miles of waterways that support water quality and floodwater storage.
The restoration and protection work focuses on recovering natural processes across 964 acres and enhancing 200 acres of riverine forested wetland systems. The project aims to restore hydrology that was historically impacted by silvicultural drainage and timber management, stabilizing the landscape to ensure the floodplain functions naturally and remains connected to its stream corridors.
To safeguard these ecological benefits, the easement ensures the property remains in a predominantly natural, scenic, and undeveloped condition in perpetuity. It restricts industrial development and land disturbance to protect the bottomland hardwood forests and riparian woodlands, providing a permanent, large-scale refuge for migratory birds and native wildlife while strengthening the ecological health of the entire Neches River Basin.
