Twin Burros | Conservation Easement

The Twin Burros Mitigation Site is a large-scale stream and wetland restoration project within the Cape Fear River Basin. Developed by Wildlands Engineering and permanently protected by Unique Places to Save, this project revitalizes streams historically impacted by livestock, erosion, and loss of riparian buffers.

The project restores and enhances more than 10,200 linear feet of stream channels across a series of unnamed tributaries to Hughes Mill Creek, a water supply and High Quality Water (HQW) stream. The site also includes nearly 20 acres of riparian wetland restoration and enhancement. Restoration activities include stabilizing streambanks, removing invasive species, replanting native vegetation, and excluding cattle from sensitive areas.

These efforts improve water quality, restore aquatic habitat, and strengthen the health of the surrounding watershed. With long-term protection secured by a conservation easement held by Unique Places to Save, the Twin Burros site contributes to regional conservation goals while supporting the ecological function of one of North Carolina’s most important river systems.
