CONSERVING A TRANSITIONAL WETLAND IN A RAPIDLY DEVELOPING ESTUARY

The Alligator Creek Conservation Project enhances ecological health and protects critical wetland habitat in the Lower Cape Fear River Estuary, helping to offset environmental damage from the Kerr-McGee Superfund Site in Navassa, NC. The project is located on Eagles Island, where wetlands have been impacted by historic dredge disposal and restricted hydrology.

In partnership with New Hanover Soil and Water Conservation District, and funded by the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation directed by the Natural Resource Trustee Council, the project permanently protects 14 acres of wetland habitat, predominantly tidal freshwater emergent marsh, and expands existing conservation of the Eagles Island Dedicated Nature Preserve.

CONSERVE

This project protects 14 acres of wetlands classified as the Brunswick River/Cape Fear River Marshes Natural Area, rated Exceptional by the North Carolina Natural Heritage Program.

These wetlands will continue to support water quality, provide wildlife habitat, and absorb stormwater in a rapidly developing area.
