The East Mingo Creek Mitigation Site is a 44.75-acre stream and wetland restoration project designed to improve water quality and ecological function in the Cape Fear River Basin. Spearheaded by Wildlands Engineering and protected under a permanent conservation easement held by Unique Places to Save, the project transforms an actively grazed agricultural landscape into a resilient, restored ecosystem.

The site includes East Mingo Creek and ten tributaries, many of which have been historically straightened, ditched, and degraded by livestock access. Through restoration, the project enhances over 8,400 linear feet of stream and 30 acres of wetlands, reestablishing natural floodplain connection and improving habitat for aquatic species. Restoration techniques include livestock exclusion, streambed reconstruction, floodplain reconnection, and the planting of native vegetation.

These efforts reduce erosion, filter pollutants, support biodiversity, and strengthen the health of downstream waterways. As conservation easement holder, Unique Places to Save ensures the site remains protected in perpetuity.

Why the Right Conservation Partner Matters

Conservation easements are permanent, legally binding agreements that shape how land can be utilized far into the future. Because of that permanence, the organization you choose to work with matters as much as the land itself.
